ESOL Program
At Estero High School, the fastest growing group of students is those immigrants who do not speak English as their first language. We have a large population of Latin American students, predominantly but not exclusively from Mexico, as well as a growing number of Haitians and South Americans. Additionally, we occasionally teach students from Europe and Asia.
The ESOL Program teaches English language and American culture to our students in order to integrate them as quickly as possible into regular classes. At each grade level, there are two levels of English classes, so each 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grader may be placed in an English class based on both level of English and grade.
Our foreign language department works hand in hand with the ESOL program. We have a class for native Spanish speakers so they may study and maintain their mother tongue. We also offer French classes so our Haitian students may perfect the academic language of Haiti.
In addition to our academic offerings, Estero High School maintains a Migrant Program, which focuses on helping students academically and socially while dealing with migratory living. Also, the Latin Club, sponsored by a Spanish teacher, promotes cultural activities for our Latin American students and gives them the chance to share their culture with others. We also offer the Work Skills and CROP programs which give ESOL students unique opportunities to plan for their futures.
